Churches and the Original Birthday Present

One of the functions of the church is to honor and make meaning out of the important times of our lives including weddings, funerals and arrival of newborns.

When a new baby comes we want to speak a blessing over that child. We also want to communicate to Mom and Dad that we, the church, stand with them in their celebration. One way we can do that is to give these new parents the same Baby Gifts that Jesus received: gold, frankincense and myrrh which communicate an important message about Jesus as well as the destiny of the new baby.

A gift is a powerful thing, opening the way for the giver (Proverbs 18:16) and we propose that churches actually give parents something at this time. Of course, it doesn't have to be the Original Birthday Present, but we can't think of anything better!
